Photo of the Week

This is another shot from the shrine, very similar to one I posted in my New Year’s photo album, but with a different point of focus.

Every New Year, people of Japan visit shrines and temples in droves to pray for good fortune in the coming year. There must have been thousands of these paper prayer things (I don’t know what they’re called but basically you write your prayer or wish on them for the year and tie it somewhere around the shrine) at this one shrine alone. I remember thinking the other day, as I walked around the grounds to shoot some photos and look around, that there’s so much about Japan I don’t understand. And this is one of them: religion.
